A desktop full of open windows can make it hard to see the wood for the trees. Here we show you how you can snap together your important windows and reduce the clutter.
Windows 11 makes multitasking far more efficient with built-in tools like Snap Layouts and Snap Assist. These features let you quickly organize open applications into neatly arranged sections of your screen, whether you prefer side-by-side windows, thirds, or full quadrants.
Using Snap Layouts with Your Mouse
One of the easiest ways to arrange windows is by using Snap Layouts directly from the maximize button:
Move your mouse cursor over the Maximize button in the top-right corner of any open window. A selection of layout templates will appear. Choose the section of the layout where you want the current window to snap. Windows will automatically position the app into the selected area, helping you create a cleaner and more productive workspace in seconds.
Using Keyboard Shortcuts
If you prefer keyboard shortcuts, Windows 11 offers several quick options:
Press Windows Key + Z to open the Snap Layouts menu instantly.
Select a layout by pressing the corresponding number shown on screen.
You can also use:
Windows Key + Left Arrow to snap a window to the left side of the screen.
Windows Key + Right Arrow to snap a window to the right side.
These shortcuts are especially useful when working across multiple apps or monitors.
How Snap Assist Helps
After snapping your first window into place, Windows 11 automatically activates Snap Assist. This feature displays thumbnails of your remaining open apps, allowing you to quickly choose which applications should fill the unused areas of the screen. Simply click one of the suggested thumbnails, and Windows will complete the layout for you automatically.
Why Use Snap Features?
Snap Layouts and Snap Assist are ideal for:
Comparing documents side by side
Managing emails while browsing the web
Editing content while referencing research
Improving productivity on large or ultrawide monitors
With just a few clicks or keyboard shortcuts, Windows 11 makes it easy to keep your desktop organized and your workflow efficient.
