When you’re presenting in PowerPoint, how do you focus the audience’s attention? In this video we show you how to quickly change the standard pointer, so everyone’s attention stays exactly where you want it.
Keeping your audience focused during a presentation is essential and PowerPoint’s built-in laser pointer feature makes it easy to highlight key information in real time. Instead of relying on a physical laser one, you can turn your mouse cursor into a virtual laser directly within Slide Show mode.
By holding Ctrl and clicking the left mouse button on Windows — or pressing Cmd + L on Mac — PowerPoint replaces the standard cursor with a laser pointer that follows your movement on screen. You can even choose between red, green, or blue colours to suit your presentation style.
How to Use PowerPoint Pointer Tools
Activate the Laser Pointer: During Slide Show mode, press Ctrl + L to instantly switch your cursor into a laser pointer. This helps direct attention to important data, charts, or key talking points without distracting from the slide itself.
Change the Pointer Colour – To customise the laser pointer colour, go to Slide Show > Set Up Slide Show and choose from red, green, or blue options.
Use Pen and Highlighter Tools – PowerPoint also includes annotation tools for live presentations. Right-click during the slideshow, select Pointer Options, and choose either Pen or Highlighter to mark up slides as you speak.
Return to the Standard Cursor – When you’re finished using the pointer tools, press Ctrl + A or Esc to switch back to the normal arrow cursor.
Why It Matters
Using laser pointers, pens, and highlighters can make presentations feel more interactive and easier to follow. These tools are especially useful for complex or high-stakes presentations where guiding audience attention is critical. Instead of viewers passively reading slides, you can actively lead them through the information step by step.
