POWERPOINT: Add sound to your slides

If you want to create a PowerPoint presentation that will impress, consider adding sound. Music, sound effects and audio files can make your presentation stand out. It’s a lot simpler than you think.

Adding sound to your PowerPoint presentation is an easy way to make your slides more engaging and professional. Whether you want to include background music, sound effects, or voice narration, PowerPoint offers simple tools to help bring your presentation to life.

Add Audio to a Slide

You can insert audio files such as MP3 or WAV directly onto a slide. Simply go to Insert > Audio > Audio on My PC, choose your file, and click Insert. A speaker icon will appear on the slide, which you can move or hide during the presentation.

Play Music Across Multiple Slides

For background music throughout your presentation, insert the audio on the first slide and select Play in Background under the Playback tab. This automatically plays the music across all slides. You can also enable Loop until Stopped if the track is shorter than your presentation.

Add Sound Effects to Animations

Sound effects can make animations more dynamic and engaging. Open the Animation Pane, right-click an animation, and select Effect Options. From there, choose a built-in sound or upload your own custom effect.

Record Narration

PowerPoint also lets you record narration directly into your slides. Go to Insert > Audio > Record Audio, then use the record and stop buttons to capture your voice. This is ideal for self-running presentations or tutorials.

Quick Tips for Better Audio

  • Hide the speaker icon during presentations using Hide During Show
  • Trim unnecessary silence with the Trim Audio tool
  • Set audio to start Automatically for smoother playback
  • Use MP3 or WAV files for the best compatibility

Adding audio can transform a standard presentation into a more immersive experience that keeps your audience focused from start to finish
